A View From The Back: “Little Drummer Boy”

Posted on Updated on

*My newest post in my blog series about my View From The Back*

So, I was looking for the best version of “Little Drummer Boy” and instead I found this 🙂 So, two disclaimers about this version, not exactly the mood I was going for, but I do love the uniqueness of it. Second, I do LOVE the band (Walk Off The Earth), go check out more of their videos.

“Little Drummer Boy” is by far and away my favorite Christmas carol. This realization didn’t really hit me until this year when I really had a chance to reflect on the lyrics. Take a look at them with me.

Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
On my drum?

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.

Man, that Pa Rum Pum Pum Pum part gets me every time! The reason I love this song is just the clear presentation of our reaction to the Gospel. As we await Christ’s coming, we are here on this earth to serve Him with the gifts that he has given us. Some of us have very prominent gifts of teaching, preaching, healing, or whatever it may be. However, some of us don’t. I know I like to think of myself “Jack of all Trades but a Master of None”. This has lead to some inner conflict in my life of never really being truly great at something.

This past year though, I have realized that God has given me the ability to be able to listen, and specifically to intricacies in audio to make for a comfortable environment for people. The Lord has opened up doors for me to use these gifts to serve Him full-time and I could not be more grateful. I am not doing “amazing things” like speaking to a million people, but I am serving the Lord with my gifts and talents, and in the end that’s all God calls us to, and that’s all He really desires from us. No gift is greater than another, no calling is greater than another, it is just a matter of what you do with that calling.

This little boy, within the confine of correct theology, is at the manger scene and everyone is bringing their finest gifts of the king. I can just picture of of those little kids with their favorite toy that they take everywhere and want to show everyone, whether it be a blankie, a teddy, 49ers pillow… In this case for this boy it is his drum. All this boy wants to do is play for his King, because that is his finest gift. Right now, for me, I am sitting in the back creating an environment where people can worship Christ without distraction.

What is your calling? How are you serving Christ with it?

What is your favorite Christmas Carol?

What is your favorite Christmas album?
